"You cannot serve from an empty vessel" - Eleanor Brown
As a mum, most of the time, we do not take the time to practice self-care. The thing is, self-care is the most important part of being a mum. It is non-negotiable. The family will not be able to function if the parent is burnt out.
Self-care is very important to me. When I don't practice it enough, I suffer. I get stressed easily and I have panic attacks often. When we hear the term self-care, we often think about people taking time out of their responsibility. Some even deemed it to be selfish. As a mum, most of the time, we do not take the time to practice self-care.
Often, I hear "but I don't have time to practice self-care" or "I don't have the energy to practice self-care" and I understand. As a working mum, practicing self-care is the last thing I want to do after a day at work or after a day running around with very little sleep. See the thing is, it is at this time that self-care is the most important. We have to stop and focus on ourselves before attending to the needs of the rest of your family.
Here are ten simple ways that I practice self-care that requires very little time, easy to practice anywhere AND virtually costs nothing.
10 Simple Self-Care Tips
- Journaling, also known as a brain dump. Since we do not have Dumbledore's Pensieve, this is the next best thing. An outlet for your brain.
- Practice Gratitude. Write it on a piece of paper, your notes app or even on your Facebook timeline :)
- Listening to your favourite tunes.
- While listening to your favourite tunes, dance and sing like no one's watching and listening.
- Take a walk outside around the block.
- Go to the beach. Trust me. There is something about the sand and sea breeze that makes you feel so much better.
- Bubble baths with candles. If you do not have a bath, light up candles and have a long shower.
- Sit in the sun. Even if it is for a few minutes.
- Focus on your breathing for 10 breaths.
- Wake up 10 to 15 minutes before everyone in your home and enjoy the silence.
